On March 17, 2014, Microsoft released the OneNote cloud service API that enables third-party application developers to integrate the service into their apps. More than one person can work on the same page at the same time using OneNote as a shared whiteboard environment. This allows collaboration among multiple individuals in a notebook when they are offline.

Its multi-user capability allows offline paragraph-level editing with later synchronization and merging. It can also extract or copy texts from images and documents using Optical Character Recognition It can replay audio concurrently with notes taken during the recording. It also searches "electronic ink" annotations as text, and phonetically searches audio recordings on a text key. It can search for images (e.g., screen captures, embedded document scans, photographs) for embedded text-content. OneNote also integrates search features and indexing into a free-form graphics and audio repository. They can also add embeddable content like YouTube videos. Users may add embedded multimedia recordings and hyperlinks. Users can move pages within the binder and annotate them with a stylus or word-processing or drawing tools.

Let's just hope Apple has something better in the works. In OneNote, users can create notes that can include text, pictures, tables, and drawings. You can hand write in 'Memo' (and MyScript Smart Note) and then EXPORT as text but I've had mixed results with that. Thus far I have not found what I really want, which would be something like the 'Memo' app where I can write on the screen, same as I would naturally write on paper, and then the handwriting would be converted to text. It is not perfect, but better than I would have expected.

You hand write in the box down at the bottom and its converted to text. Then its like the old timey Apple Newton. Its a bit convoluted but when you get used to it it isn't that bad. It gives you a new keyboard that will work with multiple other apps (Word, Pages, Docs, Werdsmith, etc.)īasically when you open your normal keyboard - click on the globe and get the emoticons keyboard - click on ABC and finally the handwriting entry pad opens up. The best I've seen is the 'MyScript Stylus' app.

I'm trying to get this to work, because an iPad Pro / Pencil combo is exactly the sort of mobile writing platform I'm looking for!
